Explore the Enchanting Trails of Kodachadri: A Trekker’s Paradise
Nestled in the breathtaking Western Ghats within Shimoga district, Kodachadri stands tall as the tenth-highest peak in Karnataka. This picturesque destination captivates trekkers with its lush green jungle trails, dense tropical forests, and stunning landscapes. As part of the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, Kodachadri serves as a backdrop to the revered Moola Mookambika Temple, believed to be the birthplace of Goddess Mookambika. What sets this peak apart is the mesmerizing sunset over the Arabian Sea, a unique blend of mountains and ocean rarely found elsewhere in the country. Prepare to be spellbound by the allure of Kodachadri, leaving you craving for more.
There are three primary trails to the peak, each offering a distinct experience. The most popular and challenging route begins at either Sampekatte or Marakuttaka, leading you through the awe-inspiring Hidlumane Falls. This steep and rugged trail demands navigating thick forests, gentle streams, and even scaling a waterfall—an exhilarating feat, especially during the monsoon season. Despite the arduous journey, reaching the summit will leave you in awe, surrounded by untouched forests, magical vistas, and rewarding climbs at every turn.
For those seeking a relatively easier path, consider the trail from Karakatte via Santhosh Hotel, Valur (Trek Route 2). Private vehicles can reach the small settlement near the hotel, making it an ideal starting point for a 4-5 hour trek to the peak.
The third trail, suitable for descent, follows a jeep route and is the longest of the three. You will embark on this route when returning from Kodachadri. All three trails converge at the Moola Mookambika temple, which also houses a PWD guest house—an essential landmark on your way to the peak. From here, it is a short 2-kilometer hike to the summit.
Prepare to embark on an unforgettable adventure as you explore the captivating trails of Kodachadri. Immerse yourself in the beauty of untouched nature, challenge yourself with exhilarating climbs, and experience the serenity of this trekker’s paradise.
